Allen St Sheffield
« on: Monday 16 June 25 00:08 BST (UK) »
Hi

I’m trying to locate a map of Allen Street, Sheffield. May have formally been called Smithfield’s ? I’m interested in late 1930s and 159 Allen street in particular. I’m confused as not sure if they are/were the same street and where 159 would be located. Thanks in advance!

Not sure how the street numbering goes, but would 159 be on Upper Allen St? On the 1901 census the enumerator's route seems to go ... 157, 159 Allen ST, Brocco St ...

House numbering is shown on the post-war large-scale sheets.  Not much housing property left, but 159 remains, in the centre of this 1:1250 sheet surveyed 1951.

Smithfield is a short distance to the NE, off Allen Street.  This is the georeferenced version:

Thanks for your reply. I was hoping 159 Allen Steet was the same as 4 or 9 Smithfields! I have discovered a photo in a book with my grandparents outside 4 and 9 Smithfields and have found a family with the same surname at 159 Upper Allen Street. I never knew they lived in the area so I’m trying to work out if it’s an address I didn’t know about or if they were visitors on the day of the photo!
