Elizabeth Coverley
« on: Sunday 15 June 25 22:40 BST (UK) »
Hi was hoping someone may be able to track down the parents of Elizabeth Coverley who married Thomas Kells.

Elizabeth was born in Blackburn around 1814.  She married Thomas Kells in 13 Feb 1831 • Eccles Parish, Lancaster, England.  I believe she died 1880.

There is an elizabeth coverley who was baptised in Manchester 1820 but Im unsure if this is the Elizabeth Im looking at.  The father was Thomas in that baptism.

Thanks in advance for any help

The 1820 baptism has a note showing they were from the parish of Salford.  Birthplace is Blackburn on census entries & birthyear seems consistent at 1813-1814

For her to be the one baptised in 1820, she would have to have been baptised at about 6 years old. If that was so, it would be quite possible for her parents to have moved quite a distance between her place of birth and where they were resident when they got around to having her baptised

The parents of Elizabeth (1820) were Thomas and Christina, they had three more children I have found so far: Mary 1823, Margaret 1826 and Ann 1828. It looks like a consistent pattern for baptisms not long after birth. I was hoping for a "job lot" baptism which would probably imply a set of children of different ages.

The marriage witnesses were Isaac Holt (X) and Thomas Gorse. Thomas Gorse is probably parish Clerk as he witnesses all the marriages on that page. There were several marriages in that church on the same day (13th Feb) and Isaac Holt witnessed them all. He may be just a stray parishioner dragged in as a witness or connected to one of the couples, but not necessarily to Thomas and Elizabeth.

checked 1841 census for Thomas Gorse of Eccles, confirms occupation is parish Clerk

The family of Thomas and Elizabeth are remiss in baptising the children after birth.

1851 census  Liverpool
Thomas 47
Elizabeth 37
Eliza 16
William T  11
Elizabeth 8 *
Ezekiel 6 *
Mary 3
Margaret  1

Elizabeth death recorded 1851 age 8
Ezekiel death recorded 1851 age 6

On 10 October 1852 the surviving children -William Thomas, Mary Jane  and Margaret are baptised at St. Bartholomew, Liverpool.
William Thomas was birth registered 1839  Manchester so he was 12 years old.
They were all of Marlborough Street Liverpool - father warehouseman.
