Place names near Guisborough
« on: Saturday 14 June 25 12:31 BST (UK) »
I am struggling a bit with a place of birth, and am wondering whether anyone has a good knowledge of place names near Guisborough?

It has been variously transcribed as "Lingman" (1851 census), "Hill Moor" (1861 census), "Lingmoor" (or "Lingmer", 1871 cemsus), and "Lingmar" (1881 census).

The nearest match I can find is a village called Lingdale, which Wikipedia says dates only from around the 1870s.  I'm wondering whether the area around there had previously been known as "Lingmer" or "Lingmoor"?

In case anyone is interested, the person's name is Ann Bainbridge, born around 1823, wife of Robert Bainbridge.  The couple married at Guisborough in 1844, and her maiden name was Ann Ableson (daughter of John Ableson).

Many thanks!

Thanks a lot!   That looks like the most likely match for her.

Well, it looks like everyone beat me to it, but here is supporting and extra evidence anyway.

There is a baptism at Lastingham, 12th Feb 1823: Ann, daughter of John and Ann Ableson, farmer, of Spaunton

Spaunton is just to the east of Hutton-le-Hole.

There is a newspaper report in the Yorkshire Evening Press of 9 January 1890 concerning a foxhunt, an outing of the Sinnington hounds. After finding a fox at Lastingham Banks (Lastingham is immediately NE of Spaunton) the route taken is described as "Spaunton, Lingmore, Riccal Heads, Hamla, Wood's Plantation and on past Cropton..."

I have found Riccal Heads: it is a hill summit less than a mile WNW from Spaunton. So this suggests that Lingmore was between these two points.

Looking at the modern OS map there is a cluster of Lingmoor places about 1.5 miles to the SW of Spaunton (Lingmoor Farm, Barn, Wood's Plantation and Lane). The area between Spaunton and these places looks to be quite empty, so my guess is that this area was Lingmoor/Lingmore.

I've clipped off quite a bit of this, John Ableson is not mentioned again.

This description from 1 November 1823: York Herald indicates that it was a large farm.

By 1848, when the tithe record was recorded, the farm was reduced to 130 acres, was owned by the Trustees of Manchester New College, and was occupied by Francis Hornby.

Just to give a flavour of where Ann Ableson (presumably) grew up, here is a list of field names from Francis Hornby's entry:

Lime Kiln Hillside
Back Close
Orchard
House, Yard and Premises [on the tithe map this aligns well with the modern Lingmoor Farm site]
Pond
High Water Swallows
Fair Close
Middle Close
Great Peppers
Low Peppers
Little Peppers
Low Water Swallows
Waistcoat
Low Wandles
Middle Wandles
High Wandles
Ling Moor Field
High Coopings
Low Coopings
Clamp Field
Little Hill
Chapman Field
High Ing Balk
Low Ing Balk
