Looking to extend thd Hartell family
« on: Thursday 12 June 25 18:44 BST (UK) »
I've tried the Hartell family back to the mid 1700s using existing trees and then tracing the baptismal, marriage and burial records and am now at Joseph Hartill and his two wives, Jane Fernyhough and Anna Maria Seckerson.
Joseph's father was also Joseph and his mother was Anna Maria. (Hartell seems to have started as Hartwell then became Hartall, Hartill and Hartell. Anna was sometimes Hannah)
Joseph senior was shown as being born in either 1745 or 1755 in Stafford but despite searching from 1734 to 1760 I can't find a baptism for him. His fust marriage was to Jane in 1775. Jane died in 1777 and in 1779 he married Elizabeth.
My eyesight not being brilliant and working from a temperamental mobile phone, I'm wondering if I've missed something. Can anyone find my missing Joseph senior please.

Where is Joseph shown as being born Stafford? ie - which record?

You say you have got to where you are using online trees - I presume you have checked each step yourself?  Many online trees have mistakes - some genuine, some just lazy, and some deliberate.

in Staffordshire there are 4 baptisms between 1740 & 1760 on FindMyPast Staffordshire baptisms when I searched using "Hart*"

1 of them is incorrect. The image shows it is Joseph LOW son of Jno. & Mary LOW of HARTWELL FARM. baptised at Barlasaton  March 27 1757

the remaining three are

27 April 1860 1760 Joseph son of William HARTEL bapt at Willenhall - St Giles

16 December 1752. Joseph son of Benj. HART  bapt at Wolverhampton - St Peter

8 June 1747  Joseph son of John HART also bapt at Wolverhampton - St Peter

Amended date error. Sorry!

I'm guessing that the first baptism in the post directly above should read 1760, not 1860?

I'm trying to fill in a few gaps here. I can see a marriage bond for Joseph HARTHILL and Elizabeth Kenterdine, dated 1779. Joseph was a locksmith of the parish of St Mary in Stafford (the town), and a widower, and the marriage took place in St Mary, Stafford. Joseph made his mark; the bondsman was Benjamin Kenterdine. I can't see Joseph's age mentioned but Elizabeth was "21 and upwards".

His previous marriage to Jane, in 1775, makes no mention of the age of either party; but if he had been born in 1760 (as per the baptism), he would have needed permission to marry, and there's no mention of that either. He was of the same Stafford parish then too. Name spelled Hartall that time.

I looked for children in case there were any hints with unusual names there but it seems not!
1776 - a daughter Mary (mother Jane)
1777 - Jane (mother Jane)
1780 - Joseph (mother Elizabeth)
1786 - Hannah   (all in St Mary, Stafford)

Mary's is the first baptism I can see with surname H*rt*l at this church.

There's a burial in this church for Elizabeth Heartall, widow, age 70, of Stafford, on 9 July 1824. (so suggested yob 1754). Joseph Hartall Senior was buried (from the workhouse) on Dec 31 1814, age 69; so suggested yob 1745.

Searching for poss baptisms in the range 1740-1750 throws up just 5 across the country, of which 3 are in the midlands - 1743 (Dudley, parents John and Mary), 1745 in Birmingham (no family details)  and 1748 (Birmingham, father George).

Can I ask what the Leicestershire connection is, given that this is the Leic board?

I suspect that to be a locksmith you served an apprenticeship, or "inherited" the post from a father or uncle. It might be worth searching for apprentice records.
