WW1 memorial in St. Anne, Stanley, Liverpool
« on: Tuesday 10 June 25 11:09 BST (UK) »
our war memorial has 175 names of men from our parish who died in the war.

https://saintannestanley.co.uk/war%20memorials/index.html

A group of local historians have found information for most of them but we're stumped on 12 of them. Someone on a local genealogy group suggested I try this group to see if anyone can identify them. Their names are;

F. Briggs
A. Gregson (not ADJS Gregson who appears on the memorial and for who we have info)
J. Grisedale
J. C. Jones
R. Owens
T. Riley
J. A. Stewart
T. West
N. Williams
O. Williams
T. A. Wood
A. Wright

All we know are their names (as listed), they died in WW1 and lived  or had connections to the parish of Stanley in Liverpool. Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi Geoff,

Welcome to Rootschat.

As mentioned on your FB thread I  think "J Grisedale" is probably John Grisdale, 16154 2nd Bn, South Lancashire Regt. His service records show an address for his wife at 21 Goschen Street, Old Swan. Killed in action at Hooge, 25 September 1915.

I can see just one WW1 military death with surname West and a connection with Old Swan. That is Henry West (4646 RFA) whose family lived at 32 Leinster Road. Died of wounds on 9 July 1918. Might "T" West be an error?

Hi Shaun, thanks for info. It definitely says T. West on the memorial. I can't imagine they'd make an error over something as important as that back then. I'll keep the info save tho ;-)

Just looked at your Memorial site of Biographies of your Fallen Congregation members - Excellent Biographies
Many were Soldiers of the King's Liverpool Regt - so have made links to your Church site to My King's Liverpool Regt Forum and Liverpoolpals Memorial Forum

Many are already on Our Liverpoolpals Memorial Website like Pte 52036 James Atherton of 19th Pals

https://www.liverpoolpals.com/soldier/?i=79/52036-Pte-james-atherton

Though your Post was about those 12 proving a Challenge- so I will have a go.

Great Research ShaunJ     !!

Strange Case - His Attestation states he Married Florence Brown January 1907 but No Trace
The Marriage Certificate shows they married at St Saviour on 14 July 1908
They lived in Salisbury Road below
At Attestation he was at Whitefied Grove then Goschen Street which are both Anfield more than Old Swan or Everton
His Second Son Cyril Bernard Grisdale was born 5 July 1915 and Baptised 11 August 1915 at All Saints Stoneycroft a fair distance away from Goschen Street- Father's Occupation = Soldier
Florence took both her Sons to Canada where she died aged 40 in 1920  - Cyril was only aged 5 when orphan but he stayed and Married there.
