Anomalies or inconsistencies on baptism registry.
« on: Monday 09 June 25 17:42 BST (UK) »
I have noticed when reading the entries on this baptism register that the maiden names of the mothers are recorded. However, in a few cases no maiden name is recorded. Does anyone know why this is the case?. I ask because in the case of my ancestor the maiden name is absent and only the first name of the mother is recorded. Any insight on this matter will be gratefully received. Thank you.

Presumably a fathers name is shown on the baptismal entries which potentially rules out illegitimacy?

Are the other entries made by the same priest?  If not - could just be a difference in working practice

If you want to find the maiden name - providing the birth was after 1837 & was registered you can use GRO online

Thank you for your response CaroleW. Yes the father's surname is mentioned. It is the pre-married surname of the mother that is not. This is despite the fact that on most other entries the maiden name of the mother is recorded. It is the same priest that has made the entries that I am referring to. As of the present I am more interested in this inconsistency than the maiden name itself.

First thought: These are just transcriptions, perhaps when looking at the originals the maiden name is there but got missed when transcribing?

It's also possible that the priest simply made an omission on this particular record for whatever reason.  Maybe a simple mistake.
