Sussex Apprentice Indenture
« on: Saturday 07 June 25 19:46 BST (UK) »
Evening all,

Can I ask for a bit of help.

It have an Apprentice Indenture dated 1759.
It is listed under Richard Burningham.
It also lists Robert Willard.

Please can someone explain it to me.
I don't fully understand who is the apprentice and who is the master. Or the dates etc.

Thanks in advance,

This is not an apprenticeship indenture - it's a record of tax paid.

Between 1710 and 1811, the premium that was paid to the master for taking an apprentice was subject to tax. The master was expected to pay this tax within 12 months of the start of the apprenticeship.

The entry shows that on 20 October 1760 Robert Williard, a cordwainer of Petworth, paid tax on the premium that he had received for taking Robert Bunningham as an apprentice, whose service had begun the previous year, on 18 October 1759.

The facing page (not given here) shows that the apprenticeship was for 7 years and the premium was £5, paid on the date the apprenticeship started. The tax on that premium, charged at sixpence in the pound, was 2 shillings 6 pence, paid by Williard.

(For what it's worth, I think it is written Bunningham, not Burmingham as given by Ancestry.)
