Old Post Office Directories covering Avonbridge
« on: Friday 06 June 25 15:51 BST (UK) »
Hi, I am after some advice. I am very used to using old Post Office Directories for research, and very helpful they are. Recently I have been trying to find out which district covers the village of Avonbridge. I googled this and I came across some information indicating that directories for the Stirling area would cover Avonbridge, but I couldn't find anything in them. With Avonbridge being only 6.4 miles from Falkirk and 3.8 miles from the larger village of Slamannan, I presumed myself that Avonbridge would be covered by Stirling. Maybe it is Falkirk Post Office Directories that I should be looking at. All advice greatly appreciated.

Regards

My understanding is that the Post Office directories are generally based on the proper historic counties, not on districts or areas or regions or postcodes, all of which are more recent inventions. Until TPTB messed around with the local authority boundaries in the 1970s, the county was always part of any postal address.

So Avonbridge, being partly in the parish of Muiravonside and partly in the parish of Slamannan, will be listed, if it is listed at all, in Stirlingshire.

It may be that the compilers didn't bother with smaller villages and hamlets.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

The directories that I consulted for your previous post had Avonbridge in Stirlingshire and listed under Slamannan.
