Looking for help.
« on: Friday 06 June 25 14:51 BST (UK) »
Hi folks
Looking for help and any information about William Mcfarlane b 1783. He married Elizabeth Johnston and had at least 4 children. William’s parents are likely be William Mcfarlane and Jean Whyte.

One of William and Elizabeth’s children was.
Marion Mcfarlane 1807-1853 (my 4x great grandmother) she married William Brockett in 1853.
Marion and her siblings all born in Edinburgh.

I can’t find any marriage records for William Mcfarlane and Elizabeth Johnston.

I got a hint on Ancestry (see photo)
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What is your reason for thinking the hint  could be the right William?

https://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/trafalgarancestors/details.asp?id=1378

That transcript says that that Wm McF was on the Agamemnon from 1804 to 1809. You would have to see if he could have been ‘home’ at the right times.
Also.. this Wm “ran” at Rio de Janeiro, so presumably didn’t go back to Scotland on the HMS Foudroyant.  If your man When did he go back?
When were the other 4 children born.

Familysearch as these christenings to William McFARLANE/Elizabeth JOHNSTON in Liberton;
JARDEN 1787
MARGARET 1790
SIDNEY 1791
ALEXANDER 1794
JEAN 1797
ELIZABETH 1800
WILLIAM 1804
MARION 1807

So if same couple William would be born much earlier than 1783

Also on there is a Death 5 September 1857 Glasgow
MARGARET Leitch, Spouse JOHN
Parents William McFarlane and Elisabeth Johnston McFarlane

Without a Burial to establish Williams age it is hard to pin down his Parents.

Also I think you meant 1835 that Marion married.

Trish :)

Thanks Trish and mck
I think I can rule this William out.
I’m trying to work backwards from Marion. She’s the only person that I know who is definitely mine.
She died
Thanks

Well at least we know William was born c 1760+/- a few  years as first child born 1787.

I cant see a Marriage though to Elizabeth Johnston with my resources.

There is this possible on F/S;
WILLIAM McFarlane Christening  13 December 1761 Liberton, Midlothian
Parents Alexander McFarlane, Katharine McLean

Thanks Trish
I can only find 1 Marion Mcfarlane born between 1800-1810 on SP. She was born 1807 in Liberton to William Mcfarlane and Elizabeth Johnston. So she could be the youngest of the family group that you posted.
I have her marriage certificate, 1841 and 1851 census records and a possible death!
