Lovely lady
« on: Wednesday 04 June 25 12:55 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find more information about a female called Elisabeth Coulter born approx 1717-1725 parents unknown. Possibly Newcastle upon Tyne area, or nearby.
She apparently married and was widowed. “Spouse unknown”

Her second marriage was to my relative (George Blenkinsopp baptised 1674
All saints church, Newcastle upon Tyne).
In 1744 he was about 70 years when they married in Newcastle and she was in her early-mid 30s.

They had 5 children including my direct relative Elizabeth Blenkinsopp, later married as Leaton at Whickham.
George Blenkinsopp Died 1768 and his daughter Elizabeth Blenkinsopp Leaton was his only heir, inheriting his estate and titles.
Her mother Elisabeth Coulter died in 1805.
I am keen to find out who were the family of Elisabeth Coulter.
A note in my records say that a Shafto Coulter was a cousin of “Elizabeth Blenkinsopp”
“I believe he was a person who worked either for the local government or was a solicitor.”

Any help as to “Elisabeth Coulters family and of previous marriage would we appreciated.
Blenkinsopp: Whickham & Co Durham
Leaton: Co Durham & Northumberland
Blenkinsopp Leaton: Co Durham & Northumberland & London.
Powell: London & Surrey
Vincent: St Oysth & London
Buckfield: Sutton Surrey & London,

Reading your post did she revert back to her maiden name when her first husband died rather than keep his / her married name as she's listed as "Coulter" at her second marriage to George ??? ???

Do you have the marriage record  from the Parish Register (image not a transcription)

Is that where it says she was a widow?
I don't have access to the Parish Register to be able to check but
they married by Licence and the Allegation and Bond both say she was a spinster.

The newspaper described her as 'Miss' Betty Coulter and said she was 'an agreeable young lady'

I've just realised that the newspaper archive have the date of that newspaper incorrectly recorded as 2nd June - though they married on the 7th

The banner on the first page says it covered the full week

You'd need to check it out carefully but I think the following are highly possible to be the wills of Elizabeth Coulter's parents (though you will need baptism records etc to be sure)

start here:

https://familyrecords.awh.durham.ac.uk/nei/data/simple.php
Put Coulter in the search box, select all records and click on view records

From what I can see John Coulter , probate year 1743 and Mary Coulter probate year 1774 are the very likely candidates

The links take you to Family Search where you can see/download the wills

ps given that John's Will was written in March 1743 and mentions money for his (at that time unmarried) daughters to be paid in 2 parts -  half when they married and the other half when their Mam died then I'd think it a bit of a push for Elizabeth to be married, widowed, reverted to her maiden name and re-married all between March 1843 and Jun 1844
Not totally impossible but perhaps bordering on unlikely?

You need to be signed into an account for Family Search to view them - its free to register and well worth doing

but, considering we went through a similar scenario 8 years ago (I knew this was ringing a bell) and you were able to see wills from similar links  I assume you already knew about the database, and how to use it.
