There is an auction describing Elliott’s Buildings in 1880.
A lot of buildings in Bedlington were informally named, so it’s common for names to appear on censuses and never be seen again. That also makes it difficult to pinpoint what they became in the future.
The path to enumerator took goes
“From the Newcastle turnpike on the west, down to the church and Sleekburn Lane on to the east, including, both North and South Side of the town, Glebe Row and west side of the Sleekburn Lane, Ridge Farm, meadow dale and red houses.”
- Newcastle Lane
- Dowson’s Buildings
- Rose Villas
- Dowson’s Buildings
- Elliott’s Buildings
- Ridge Cottage
Newcastle Lane is now named Hartford Road. The enumerator seemingly went up the west side of the road to Dowson’s Buildings which was owned by John Dowson. These were located where the current Masonic Hall and Salvation Army are at the main roundabout. I think Rose Villas are still there, there are the line of buildings behind the Masonic hall.
I’m yet to pinpoint Ridge Cottage, but would take a guess that it is possibly on the opening of Ridge Terrace, given it was named as such? On my own tangent, I don’t think Ridge Cottage & the Ridge Farm (near to Westlea cemetery) are the same thing, as later on in the census there’s a location described as “West End Ridge Farm” which would be the farm, evidently.
Elliot’s Buildings would be somewhere amongst that general area.
