Deciphering Irish middle name
« on: Monday 02 June 25 04:09 BST (UK) »
Hello. Below are copies of 2 Baptism records of probable cousins, Mary (1855) and Patrick (1863), who seem to share a "middle" name which appears to start with "Con....". Any ideas what this name could be? (If it's a surname, it might give me a lead on ascertaining their mutual ancestor).

Could it be a mis-spelled “Conell” or “Coneley”. ?

Depending on where , or if, you think the cross bar is, it looks like “Conetel” or “Conelet”, but I don’t see that making sense as a name.

What parish is it? Looking to get a look at a bigger sample of the priest's writing.

Perhaps the name is Condit.  I found a small number of Condits in Antrim on the Census.  One appears in Griffiths leasing land around Carrickfergus

I've seen this before ("condit") to indicate a conditional baptism.

Have a look at the surrounding pages, you will see several other instances.

Added: Just to add, the type of scenario I've encountered before is children receiving an "emergency" baptism at birth because they are sickly, then surviving and subsequently receiving a church baptism.

Well, that makes more sense, than it being a name.
Interesting.

Doh! A Conditional baptism. Of course.
Looking through various Tree websites I see other people listed with the middle name "Condit" or variations thereof. I wonder if any of these people were validly given that name because that is what someone found on grand-dad's old bap record ...
Thanks for your help.

Same as the PB you sometimes see in CoE English baptisms, meaning Private Baptism because the baby is ill and may not survive.

Sometimes followed by "Admitted to the Church" on the same day or a later date.
