John Maginnis
« on: Sunday 01 June 25 17:02 BST (UK) »
Seeking info on John Maginnis various spellings. He was born about 1803 County Down, married Catherine O' Rourke ( no date) and had children Eliza, Sarah ( both baptised in Ireland, 1832 and 1835) and Ann. In 1851 he was living with his family in Granby Row Manchester as a master shoemaker. His mother Sarah aged 77 is also at that address. I don't know how to proceed further back to find his father, mother's maiden name etc. Any help would be appreciated

Did you forget you already had a thread asking for information on him?

If the family were Catholic you could check all the online Co. Down parish registers that go back to 1830s to find baptisms for the children. However, not all registered go back that far and early ones might not list the mother.

Hi, Thanks for your reply. I haven't forgotten that I have posted similar in the past. I didn't get any further back that time so thought I would try again. As I said- I know the baptisms of John's children and their mother is listed as Catherine O' Rourke. I would like to find John's father and siblings to explore my Irish connection but cannot find resources. His mother is Sarah as she is listed on the 1851 census with him. I don't know when the family came over from Ireland to Manchester either. John's first 2 children are listed as from Tipperary and 3rd from County Down.

No need to have started a new topic- you can always add to the existing one as more information is found or if you are looking for more information.
You've now mentioned "John's first 2 children are listed as from Tipperary and 3rd from County Down." Previously you only said John was born in Co. Down which is why I suggested looking at church registers there for his children.
It may be that some of the details you've found are not correct. John born c1803 in Co, Down, having 2 children in Co.Tipperary then another in Co.Down before moving to Manchester seems to be quite a bit of moving about unless John's occupation meant he lived in both those locations in Ireland.
In order to get any further back you really need a location in Ireland (parish if not actual townland/town/city). So, start in Co.Down baptisms for the right period then back to Co.Tipperary for older children. You may find other children you weren't aware of that could have died young, stayed in Ireland or weren't with the family by 1851.
