John Stephens - St Gluvias, Penryn
« on: Saturday 31 May 25 21:26 BST (UK) »
Hi guys, me again!

Doing my husbands family tree I have hit a wall. His 3x great grandfather Richard Stephens, it appears his father is John. Now I'm getting hits for John being born in 1754 which is ok, but he wasn't married until 1797 aged 42. Now I know it isn't unheard of but "normally" they marry a lot younger. The thing is, I can't find anything on him to suggest a previous marriage. The marriage record isn't much help, there's no age, fathers name or status on it. HELP!!

You seem to be unsure about several points here.

"It appears his father is John".
What evidence do you have for this?
Do you have a birthdate for Richard?
Did John senior leave a will naming Richard as his son?

"getting hits for John born in 1754".
What do you mean? Where have you got his information from?
If it's from trees on Ancetry or similar, you should never take that as evidence.
You should do your own thorough research and obtain evidence.

Cornwall Online parish clerks is a great site for information.

There are 9 records of marriages of a John Stephen in St Gluvias between 1766 and 1797. (some are the same marriage with a record from the parish register, and then another from the BTs or other source).
https://www.cornwall-opc-database.org/search-database/marriages/index.php?year_from=1750&year_to=1800&parish=Gluvias%2C+St.&forename1=john&surname1=stephens&multiname=0&forename2=&surname2=&forename3=&surname3=&t=marriages&bf=Search

There are 10 records for the burial of a John Stephens at St Gluvias between 1797 and 1850.
https://www.cornwall-opc-database.org/search-database/burials/index.php?year_from=1797&year_to=1850&parish=Gluvias%2C+St.&forename1=john+&surname1=Stephens&t=burials&bf=Search

There were obviously many Stephens families in the area.
and this is just looking at St Gluvias.
There is always a possibility the people you are looking for came from elsewhere - either in Cornwall or the whole of England.
It may take some time and a lot of searching to find exact evidence to put the pieces of this jigsaw together.

...... it appears his father is John.

Where does this information come from?

.......... but he wasn't married until 1797 aged 42.

Who do he marry?       Where did he marry?        More information is needed.
Was it the marriage in Falmouth to Mary Parkin?
