John BARNES & Jane TATE/TAIT marriage circa 1825
« on: Saturday 31 May 25 19:51 BST (UK) »
Hi

I am seeking the parish record of the above marriage believed to have taken place in Cumberland. John Barnes born in Wigton circa 1802 (baptism traced) and Jane Tate born in Scotland circa 1805 (no baptism traced. There first 2 offspring (Joseph & Jenny) were baptised in Nicholforest parish in 1826 & 1828 respectively. They later moved south to Torpenhow and onto Oughterside.

I am working on the premise they were possibly married in Cumberland but cannot trace a recorded marriage. Of course, they may well have been married just across the border in Scotland given the proximity of Nicholforest to the border.

Does anyone have a connection or knowledge of this family or has local access to parish records? Most of the online records have borne no fruit!

Any help/advice - greatly appreciated.

Jim

On the 1871 census Jane is widowed and living with daughter Ruth and her husband. It says she was born in St Mungo Scotland, so that narrows it down a bit. I would guess that might be a parish in Glasgow.

On censuses the first two children (Joseph and Jennie / Janet) are recorded as born in Scotland. In 1881, Joseph says he was born in Annan. Very close to border with Cumberland.
