Death of George Doig
« on: Wednesday 28 May 25 22:49 BST (UK) »
Hi, I'm trying to find information about the death of my great grandfather George Doig.
I've seen his birth certificate, he was born in 1861 in Forfar, and his marriage cert to Rebekah (Rebeca) in 1893 but Scotlands People have no record of his death.
I found the following - George appears in 1901 census but doesn't in 1911. He's in the 1902/03 Val Roll at 72 Yeaman St. He was a painter and decorator.
He advertised in the Forfar Herald until 3 July 1903. He appears in the Forfar directory and yearbook 1903 (published 1902) page 12 as a male householder on Jamieson St and advertises his business on page 162 at 137 East High St. His name is scored through on the index of advertisers on page 2. He doesn't appear in the 1904 (published 1903) directory but 'Mrs George Doig' does as a female householder on page 39, at 58 Dundee Loan.
Do I assume therefor that that's as far as I can go and assume he died in 1903? Are there other
sources to check?
Any advice or information gratefully received.
Al

Either died or left the area or both (e.g. sometimes men emigrated ahead of the rest of the family but then tragedy struck before the wife and kids could follow)
Perhaps his death is just badly transcribed on indexes.

Probate records could be another source; if he left a will or enough of an estate. These would be in the jurisdiction of the estate, even if he died elsewhere.

It looks like from www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk in the Dundee Courier around 07 July 1903 there are references to the contents of his shop being up for sale. Death, bankruptcy or selling up ahead of emigration?

About my reply#2: what is the significance of the reference to a Trust Estate in the sale of the business?
