parents for Thomas and John Cox 1801-1850
« on: Tuesday 27 May 25 17:17 BST (UK) »
Dear all,
I would like to ask for some help in solving a brick wall. Specifically I am looking for parents for Thomas Cox, born c. 1801 in Devon. He is present in Exeter as a brewer in '41 with his wife Mary Jarman, and died in 1850.

I have looked for him before, but recently I made a breakthrough that might make the search a lot easier. His son James is in Exeter in '71 living next to Emanuel Cox, the son of John Cox (1802-1844) and Mary Ann Boon. Since they are neighbours, it seems likely that John and Thomas were brothers. This narrows the search to a couple who baptised a Thomas and a John Cox c. 1800 in Devon. One that I have considered and rejected is Thomas b.1801 in Doddiscombsleigh, whose brother John was baptised in 1806.

This is because this Thomas can be traced in subsequent censuses, so he can't be my man.
Best wishes,
Francis  :D

In case it helps others looking, it appears that Thomas and Mary's daughter Elizabeth was baptised at George's Meeting Exeter, Presbyterian (bap 16 Jan 1831, born 17 Dec 1830).

Ancestry only have a transcription of the marriage in 1825, have you seen the original? Who are the witnesses?

FindMyPast has the original image

Witnesses are John Shipcote/Shipcott and Isaac Spratt.

Isaac Spratt signs quite a few in the register so possibly the parish clerk.

Note Thomas Cox signs as Thomas Box, Mary Jarman made her mark

Having looked at it again, I am not too confident that Thomas' brother John's wife had the maiden name Boon. This seems like a different family. Maybe if we found the marriage it might have some witnesses who were family. It would have happened in 1828 or so.

Mary Ann (who married John Cox) was born in Brixton in Devon as Mary Ann BENNEAR. I am certain this is her since the surname Bennear appears as a middle name in some of their grandchildren

This rasies the question as to whether this is the marriage. 'James Moxey' could be a mistranscription of John Cox

Update: James Moxey was her first husband. Here's the marriage with John Cox:

Anyone have access to see who the witnesses were?
