Checking a word please
« on: Monday 26 May 25 23:14 BST (UK) »
This is from a Poor Law application in Scotland 1863.

It happily gives lots of family information.
I love the 'She was an active industrious old woman, while here she was much respected'.
'Her husband was a dyer and ? of cloths'?

I have an idea what I think it is, but would be grateful for other opinions.
Many thanks

"dyer and cleaner" - there are many mentions and advertisements for dyer and cleaner in newspapers of the  time, eg this one which gives an idea of the types of fabrics that may have been worked.

Thanks GR2 and Maddy.
I thought it might have been 'cleaner', but had not come across this before.
On all the documentation I have for him, he has always just been a 'dyer'.

That's an interesting piece Maddy.
It sounds almost like a present day dry-cleaners!
I wonder what other means of cleaning fabrics they had at at time other than just washing.
I'm sure there must have been other remedies which we now no longer use or remember.

Would you be able to look for any mention of 'dyers' or 'dyers and cleaners' in Scottish papers Maddy?
My ancestor Lewis Bertolle, (you can imagine how many different spellings you can get!), was in Paisley from about 1830 to 1840, then at Bonhill/Alexandria Dunbartonshire, from 1840 to his death in 1863.
I have him in the Paisley directories as a dyer in Bladda (1830) and Saucel (1836) - which are both down on the river Cart in Paisley.
His wife Elizabeth - of this Poor Board application, died in 1880 in Paisley.

When I was looking yesterday I came across the term "French Cleaning" (sometimes "Dyer and French Cleaner"). Not something I've heard of before, but apparently a precurser, or type of dry cleaning.

Can't see any particular reference to Lewis Bertolle, though haven't tried multiple spellings. There are these interesting bits about  dyers and cleaners in the Paisely area. (Interesting too that in the original article I posted yesterday, the advertiser hired someone who was originally from Edinburgh.)

Walter HOGG, "silk, cotton and woollen dyer and cleaner in Paisley", bankrupt in 1877.
