Mother dead, so who is the new wife?
« on: Monday 26 May 25 11:32 BST (UK) »
I'm getting myself into such a muddle looking for parents of an Elizabeth Hinchliff (born 1833) so need some assistance.

Elizabeth Hinchliff was born in about 1833. In the census records where she appears with her husband (John Stevens), she is listed as being born in the following places:

1861 - Birmingham
1871 - Oldbury, Worcestershire/Staffordshire
1881 - Birmingham
Missing in 1891
1901 - Burton, Staffordshire (living with her daughter Sarah Ann and her daughter's husband Benjamin Hipkiss)

When trying to trace her parents, I started with her marriage to John Stevens. She married him in 1859 in West Bromwich. Her father is listed as Thomas Hinchliffe.

I couldn't find her in the 1851 census, but I think I've found her in 1841, living in Burton upon Trent as follows:
Thomas Hincliff - 30 - Tailor - Born in county
Ann Hinchliff - 20 - Born in county
Elizabeth Hinchliff - 8 - Not born in county
Eliza Hinchlif - 5 - Not born in county
Fanny Hinchliff - 3 - Born in county
Mary Hinchliff - 1 - Born in county

As Elizabeth was born pre-1837, I looked on GRO for her younger siblings and found both Fanny and Mary were born to a mother with the maiden name Scattergood.

However, I found no marriage between an Ann Scattergood and Thomas Hinchliff. I then looked at Mary Hinchliff's birth record (from 1840) and her mother is listed as Eliza Hinchliff (deceased). GRO does have a death record in 1840 of an Eliza Henchliff, who died aged 30.

There seems to be an Eliza Scattergood who married a Thomas Henchliff, a tailor, in Derbyshire in 1832. If this is the same couple, this could be why their daughters Elizabeth and Eliza were not listed as being born in county in the 1841 census.

Now I'm muddled. I think this family is my Elizabeth Hinchcliff (born abt 1833) who's father's name was Thomas Hinchliff. If it is, and her mother Eliza died in 1840 (during childbirth of her sister Mary), who is the Ann Hinchliff (age 20) living with Thomas Hinchliff in 1841?
Warwickshire, Birmingham, Worcestershire, Shropshire, Bridgnorth.

My first instinct would be to say Ann is Eliza’s younger sister. Brought in to take care of the baby Mary after the death of Eliza.
A theory to work on anyway

I think I may have just solved this myself. I viewed the death record for Eliza Hinchliff (died 1840) and the person present at death was an Ann Wilson of Burton.

There is a family (Thomas and Ann Hinchliff) that I found living together in Burton but I'd discounted this family because their children were listed as mother's maiden name Wilson.

Perhaps my Thomas Hinchliff married Ann Wilson after his first wife Eliza Scattergood died, and he continued to have more children.

A possibility?

That certainly does sound plausible.

Fanny is on the GRO index 1838 Burton upon Trent as Henchcliff MMN Scattergood so it looks like your theory is correct on the second marriage
