Looking for Parents of John Henry Reed
« on: Saturday 24 May 25 14:25 BST (UK) »
As John Henry Reed was born in Swansea 1/1/1862 but found on the 1871 Census living at Lewis Street Newport Monmouthshire, I wasn't sure where to put this, so thought The Common Room covered it. His Mother Mary F Reed on the 1871 Census was a widow born Ilfracombe Devon 1832 but has been transcribed St Pacomb on the Census. John Henry's Marrriage Certificate dated 25/12/1886 states his father Hubert Reed is deceased & profession had been a Contractor.
I can't find a marriage for Mary F & Hubert Reed in Swansea, Newport or Devon. One possible Baptism I have found is for John Henry Reed was 20/8/1862 Newport, Parents Herbert a Sawyer & Wife Mary Hannah living at 44 Dolphin Street Newport. I would very much appreciate some help with this.

Birth registration for the 1862 John has mother's maiden name blank:

REED, JOHN  HENRY     -
GRO Reference: 1862  S Quarter in NEWPORT  Volume 11A  Page 166

Forgot John was born Swansea; jorose posted the correct one:

READ, JOHN  HENRY     TOMS
GRO Reference: 1862  M Quarter in SWANSEA  Volume 11A  Page 502

John's sister Thirza has mother's maiden name 'Toms':

REED, THIRZA  JANE     TOMS
GRO Reference: 1864  S Quarter in NEWPORT  Volume 11A  Page 168

Thirza's parents on her baptism are also Herbert & Mary Hannah of Dolphin Street.

On the 1881 census with her 2 children, Mary is 'Mary H.' and born in Newport.

There's a Mary Ann Toms, daughter of Philip and Mary Ann, who is down on the 1851 census as being born in Ilfracombe, Devon in 1834. From at least 1841, the family is living in St Woollos, Newport. She also had a sister called Thirza.

Possible marriage between a "Harbert Read" and "Mary Anna Thoms" in Newport in 1852. Can't currently find a parish register entry to confirm that these 2 married each other and not the other possible names on the civil registration index.
