The story I was told was that he built it. May have just lived there.

The item is entitled "Burgh Coup Damage" and is about a farmer's claim of damages against the local authority. I don't know what the word 'coup' means in this context, but it seems likely that it was some sort of municipal rubbish tip.
Exactly that.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

In 1914 the owner was Alexander Preston and the tenant was William Wallace

As above in 1920

Same owner in 1905 but tenant was Walter Burns

1921 census shows Janet Russell at 72 Old Monkland Rd. with a son James. I believe to be my grandfather. I need to tie Isabella Brown (on headstone) to Mathew Brown Russell (married to Janet Russell in 1903), who I believe was her son and my search will be complete. Almost done!
