Thank you for the response. I was there in April and took photos of the house and the headstone.

There is a long article ,10 May 1924: Coatbridge Leader, that mentions a Matthew Russell at the address 72 Old Monkland Road.

The item is entitled "Burgh Coup Damage" and is about a farmer's claim of damages against the local authority. I don't know what the word 'coup' means in this context, but it seems likely that it was some sort of municipal rubbish tip.

This side by side map view shows the position of no. 72 Old Monkland Road in relation to the sites mentioned in the newspaper article.

the LH map is from the mid-20th century and includes house numbering so that no. 72 can be identified.
the RH map is from the early 20th century and shows the position of Brownshill Farm in relation to Old Monkland Road.

If you zoom out you will see a lot of industry just to the north.

This 25 inch map from 1910 shows Brownhills Farm with adjacent brickworks.

There are 28 hits for James Russell in the 1921 census in RD Coatbridge or Old Monkland.

What was your grandfather's birth date? Did he have any other names?

Thanks for the information. Interesting article as my brother is named Mathew Russell! Don't have a date of birth as yet, but I'm reaching out to other family members.

According to SP
Born March 26, 1906. Makes sense.
Getting somewhere!
Still exploring how Mathew Russell ended up at 72 Old Monkland Rd. in 1924.

Also SP

In 1921 James Russell aged 15y 7mo is living at 72 Old Monkland Road with his mother and older sister.

From searches of the Valuation Rolls it looks like the house was built before 1915 (when it is present in the records), and possibly after 1905 (when it is not found).

It's unclear how this can fit with him building the house.
