Royal Navy Reserves Records Abbreviations Help Please
« on: Saturday 17 May 25 13:31 BST (UK) »
This is a roll call and I know that Walter was given the Victory Medal, British War Medal.

I have attached the information from the roll call which is on Ancestry, along with the image of his entry.

Is there anyone who can tell me what the abrev: 2 Hd. stand for?  Also what the WW means for how the medals were given and I.C 481/1922 in the last column (which is remarks)?

Also why someone would receive these medals.  As you can tell I am not from a military background.

Any help would be appreciated.

I would suggest that Ww means that the medals were issued to his Widow

The 2 Hd is his rank -- Second Hand -- this is confirmed on one of his service records (snippet image courtesy of the National Archives)

Walter died late 1921, I would suggest that I.C. 481/1922 was a reference number to show that his medals were issued in 1922

The first mage that you posted is not a roll call, it is actually the UK, Naval Medal and Award Rolls, i.e. a register showing the names of naval men and the medals that they were awarded.

Walter first enrolled into the Royal Naval Reserves on the 28/10/1911 and was removed from the Reserves on the 5/6/1913.

The RNR was mainly made up of fishermen and this would be the case of Walter who enrolled into the RNR for a second time on the 3/7/1917 as a leading deckhand. His record also shows that his rank was a Second Hand -- the rank is defined as follows --

The second hand was the second-in-command to the skipper. Responsibilities typically included crew supervision and overseeing deck operations and assisting the skipper with navigation and watch-keeping.

During the war he would have been serving with the Royal Naval Reserve (Trawler Section) on an armed trawler or a drifter belonging to the auxiliary patrol, and prior to the war he would have been employed as a professional fisherman.

When Walter married Annie Maud Harris, he declared that he was a Fisherman

Hope this is of help to you.

Thank you so much AllanUK.

This is my husbands great uncle and we have been looking for information regarding him for a number of years.

I knew he was a fisherman, but with the 1921 census coming out I could not work out why I could not find him.  The census shows his wife and children and states she was married.  I had looked everywhere to see if he was at sea.  When I looked into the military records I saw he was using one of his middle names Walter.

You have helped fill in some gaps.
