this could be his baptism in 1893 - noted as illegitimate

https://www.cornwall-opc-database.org/search-database/more-info/?t=baptisms&id=6955406

same address as on the 1891 census

1911 for Tryphena under her middle name of Annie in case Fred is nearby

Mother Martha was admitted to Bodmin Asylum 16 May 1911, census was 2 April. Haven't spotted her on census as yet.

He is listed as Frederick in 1891

Do you have his birth certificate  :-\.   This is a possibility
LANGSON, FREDERICK       -  (No mothers maiden surname)
GRO Reference: 1888  June Quarter in SAINT COLUMB MAJOR  Volume 05C  Page 81

If you don't have the certificate it may be worthwhile as he may be the son of someone other than Martha

I don't have his birth certificate. I've checked online and it seems that I need to apply via the GRO where there are three choices of format for the birth certificate. Since I've not previously had a need to approach them can I ask what the most sensible option would be? Thanks in advance.

Personally, as we are not sure if it is the correct person I would be going for the cheapest option Digital at £3.  It is exactly the same scan for the information but the dear one is mounted on a paper copy and the PDF a copy of that.  The £3 option gives you the image but it is not mounted on any proforma.

This is a link to a £3 death certificate which gives some idea of the format, I can't locate a birth one on here at the moment

Hi Rosie,
Thanks for the speedy response which answers the question perfectly. I'll get the £3 digital file. The crazy thing is that Fred is a distraction - he's not directly related - but he's interesting, if that makes sense!

I've managed to obtain the digital file of Fred's birth from GRO on payment of £3. This is a first for me. Trust I'm permitted to share it here...

Thanks for this Cathy, the birth place being St Cleer is a fit with earlier information. On FindMyGrave Sandy has included an entry for a Martha Langston at St Breock which would be a good fit, sadly it lacks a photo. Further it begs the question that as Martha had fallen to become a pauper, placed in the asylum, would the family have paid for her to been buried at St Breock?

It is possible that Martha was in the asylum because of poor health or age related problems, the workhouse asylums were the hospitals at that time.

Glad to see that the birth certificate was for the right Frederick  ;D
