I'd like to find Fred's father - where shall I look next?

Hi, I'm researching Fred Langson who died during WW1 in 1918. He's a distant cousin on my mother's side of the family.

I know Fred's mother. I know that her husband cannot have fathered Fred because he died more than a year before Fred was conceived.

I can see Fred, siblings and mother Tryphena Annie Langson in the 1901 census but I can't find him in the 1911 census. Any ideas why that might be the case?

He wed in 1914, fathered a son Vernon and was KIA in France in 1918. All records that I have found show his name as Langson.

Where should I look next?

I'm hoping to enlist help from this wonderful community.

Thanks in advance, Andy

The obvious place would be DNA from descendants of Vernon unless you can find anything in newspapers about child maintenance or similar.  Does his 1914 marriage give any information on a father

Thank you for sharing your thoughts Rosie. So far, I've only been able to find the marriage on FreeBMD and that doesn't give me his father's details.

I'll see what I can find out about Vernon. I have established that a war pension was paid. I'll look further into Vernon.

Could Fred have failed to mention, if indeed he knew, his father's details. Might he have fudged it by saying that his dad had died?

I am confused. Fred appears to have married Tryphena Annie Hill in 1914, you have her as his mother.

Is he the Fred bn Wadebridge c1888 with mother Martha and brother Arthur living in Wadebridge in 1901

I too was at a loss with Fred's mother> If indeed his mother is Martha her maiden name was Gertrell who's husband was George. George died 1882. Son Arthur appears in 1881 census and 1901 census with Martha and Fred.

1881 ref 2295 69 25

1891 ref for Fred & Martha 1818 138 10

He is listed as Frederick in 1891

Do you have his birth certificate  :-\.   This is a possibility
LANGSON, FREDERICK       -  (No mothers maiden surname)
GRO Reference: 1888  June Quarter in SAINT COLUMB MAJOR  Volume 05C  Page 81

If you don't have the certificate it may be worthwhile as he may be the son of someone other than Martha

this could be his baptism in 1893 - noted as illegitimate

same address as on the 1891 census

1911 for Tryphena under her middle name of Annie in case Fred is nearby

Mother Martha was admitted to Bodmin Asylum 16 May 1911, census was 2 April. Haven't spotted her on census as yet.

Apologies, that was my misstep whilst away from my documents. I believe Fred's mother to have been Martha and that Tryphena Annie Hill was as you have correctly deduced Fred's wife.
