Missing from 1911 Census?
« on: Thursday 15 May 25 21:41 BST (UK) »
Ultimately this thread is a carry on from an old thread here:
https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=850588.0

I haven't been able to find my great-grandfather Dennis Levi Lowe (later William Levi Smith) in the 1911 census. I've always thought this was strange.

In 1901 he is living with his grandparents William and Maria Savage in Hatton. He married Kate Elizabeth Eden on 16 Sep 1911, his residence is given as Illshaw Heath (he had a child with her born out of wedlock in 1909). Kate Elizabeth Eden is in the 1911 census living in Illshaw Heath, living with her mother Catherine. On the same record there's a "William Legge", 32 (est birth 1879), born Shropshire.

Dennis was born 1883 in Beausale, Warwickshire. Any thoughts?

Given he changed his name later on, perhaps living under an alias? In prison? I think the military is unlikely.

What was his occupation when he married?

You could check newspapers for any reports of wrongdoing.  Dennis Levi Lowe is an uncommon mix of names to search for.

At what point did he change his name?

The Coventry Standard has an article from 29 May 1914 but I haven’t access to read it.

Hi Milliepede,

His son William Joseph Lowe was baptised 21 May 1914, birthplace Coleshill. (1914, Jul-Aug-Sep, Meriden Warwickshire, Eden, 6d, 1274)

His son George Arthur Smith was baptised 19 Jun 1916, birthplace Bentley. (1916, Jul-Aug-Sep, Atherstone Warwickshire, Eden, 6d, 1181)

So sometime between these two dates, he never went back to using Dennis Levi Lowe. I have searched the newspapers on various occasions with little luck. He enlisted for WW1 21st May 1917 and was transferred to the reserve in 1919.

Perhaps something happened in Coleshill/Castle Bromwich but this does not explain his absence from the 1911 census.

Only one verifiable trip to jail, in 1926 for an assault on William Andrew Bartlam and his wife. Sentenced to one month hard labour in Atherstone gaol. We have long suspected more..

Kind regards,
Zak

Attestation papers from 1906 (can’t see full details) so could he have been posted on duty somewhere to explain why he appears to be missing in 1911?

No, he attested 12 January 1906, then paid £10 and was discharged after 67 days on 19 March 1906
