What happened to Jane Dixon? (North Shields)
« on: Wednesday 14 May 25 23:59 BST (UK) »
I’m trying to find out what became of Jane Dixon (nee Wardrobe) who was the widow of Charles Dixon.

Recently I got a hold of her Trinity Street Petition, which says that Charles was a mariner working on the ship Ranger to captain Thomas Atkinson. He drowned on 31 Aug 1816.

The records attached show that Jane & Charles married in Jun 1811 and had three children; George (1811), Thomas (1815), Charles (1817-1887). At the time of petition, Jane was 31 (b. 1788) and lived at Fish Market in North Shields, but her baptism records were not attached as “she cannot obtain her baptism due to losing her parents in infancy”.

George’s baptism in 1812 mentions her as the daughter of Thomas Wardrobe, native of All Saints.

I think Jane might’ve had an illegitimate daughter, Jane, bap 1809 at Haydon Bridge who then died at Gateshead in 1811.

Any help is appreciated  :)

Thank you for those, certainly something to look into with Thomas having the same job.

If Ann was born in 1796 as the 3rd child, and Thomas & Isabella were married in 1794 that seems quite a short time to have three children in. Maybe two of those daughters from a previous marriage? (One being Jane ???)

There was a burial for a Mary Wardrup 31 Mar 1804, daughter of Alexander Wardrup & Margaret Engles.

my only other thoughts were that perhaps Isabella Chrisp and Thomas Wardrobe lived as man and wife prior to their marriage for a few years

Ann was born 1786*8 bapt 1800 and the couple married 1794.
So by 1800 Thomas was deceased when Ann was baptised.

As we cant find bapts for the other 2 daughters mentioned we have no idea when they were born except it was before Ann.

As said they had children before they married.

Given Jane's age when Charles died she likely remarried.

I agree Jane likely remarried after Charles’ death, but with such a common name as Dixon makes it difficult to find.  :(

Radcliffe

I don’t know what happened to Jane’s elder two children sadly (Thomas and George), but youngest Charles (my gt-grandfather times-something) did marry Dorothy Graham in 1838.

He married her at Earsdon which I believe was Dorothy’s parish, became a coal miner at Cramlington, then Bedlington and later Choppington. He died 1887.
