Stretton Parish, Great Broughton 1861 Census
« on: Wednesday 14 May 25 11:22 BST (UK) »
Hi Folks, I am struggling to find a census return in 1861 for Martha Chesters born circa 1786-90. She is in the 1851 census and her burial is recorded under that name in 1865 in Acton. She was a farmer of 300 acres in 1851. I tried to do a search by address on FindMyPast for 1861 but I cannot find the parish of Stretton, Great Broughton.
I have come across a few Welsh parishes that are missing in 1861 but none in England so far. Is anyone aware that Stretton parish is missing or have I just messed up my address search on FindMyPast?
Thanks for looking

The link in reply #1 goes to the household of William and Ann Morris 35 and 23 respectively where the Martha Chesters candidate is a visitor. [Incidentally Martha’s age is mistranscribed at A***y as 24 where it should be 74].

Ann Morris pob is Malpas.

There is a possible marriage link:

William Morris m Ann Chesters
Q3 1859 Great Boughton

Unfortunately I can't find a parish record for this.

At that time would a widow normally have remarried with her maiden name or with her married name?

Yes, it seems that her married name was Chesters:

1 October 1859: Chester Chronicle
Quote
22nd ult., at the parish church, Tilstone, by the Rev. W. Lowe, M. A., Mr William Morris, of Duckington, Cheshire, to Mrs Ann Chesters, of Stretton, in the same county.

DCB and Alan Boyd, Thank you so much for those really helpful posts. No wonder I could not find Martha if her age has been mis-transcribed as 24. I'm not sure what I did wrong when looking for Stretton Parish in the address search though. I obviously need to hone my skills on that one.
Thanks again, that is definitely our Martha.
I am not sure about Ann Chesters, Martha and her husband Thomas had a number of sons. I have not gone in to those yet but it may well be the widow of one of their sons though they did have a daughter called Anne baptised along with two siblings in 1814.
