WW2 – RAF – help with wireless mechanic military record
« on: Friday 09 May 25 15:08 BST (UK) »
I requested my fathers RAF military record, he served in WW2 working on radar. His record is headed   ACH/RDF/WM which I understand is Aircraft Hand/ Radio Detection Finder (ie radar) /Wireless Mechanic. I have also managed to put together the skeleton of where he served and unpicked most of the abbreviations.
However, I would appreciate any information on what the following may mean:
(i)   In the promotions section – description - T/6PL – 6PL
(ii)   In the Miscellaneous section  - (typed not handwritten) – Unasterisked trade scheme X. Not to remuster without ref. to Air Ministry  M.7
(iii)   In the Miscellaneous section  (in pencil)  - BAFO 2/3 -21/12/4? – which I understand is British Air Force of Occupation .  but he was down as being in 30MU at Sealand and at RAF Linton-on -Ouse during this time not in Europe!
Hope that someone will be able to help. I have read others posts and replies which have already helped with some tricky abbreviations.

Yes ACH/RDF/WM was a trade.

The promotions is T/Cpl - Temporary Corporal - his rank

Tradesmen were to be only used in the trade they were trained - only by re-muster and reversion in Classification eg reduction in pay could they be used for other tasks with their agreement.

Difficult to expand on BAFO without seeing the record.

Thank you for information on rank and explaining about the use of trades.
This is the my timeline of events produced from the military record, including my notes based on research online. I don’t know if it helps explain the BAFO note on the record. There is re-mustering to locations in Europe.

Agree - nothing jumps out as posted or attached to a BAFO formation.

Looks like you have the timeline correctly deduced.

1947 discharge also means no indirect connection between Transport Command and Berlin Little Lift in 1948.

1946 Posting to RAF Linton-on-Ouse means you can also rule out any attachment to BAFO for Cooks Tours or returning PoW as these had finished by 1946.

Just one thing " There is re-mustering to locations in Europe." Re-mustering relates to trade change not location change. I could not see any suggestion of Europe locations in your notes.
