Back Street Chapel Hitchin burial records
« on: Thursday 08 May 25 14:22 BST (UK) »
I wonder if anyone might be able to point me in the right direction for burial records from the old congregational chapel that was on Back Street in Hitchin. The burial ground was, I believe, cleared in 1969 and there seems to be some question of how this was done, but what I'm hoping to find is the records from the chapel which would name the folk who were buried.
I've tried national and local archives and searched everwhere I can think of online - any suggestions would be most appreciated. Many thanks  ???

Are you looking for one particular burial or for those of everybody buried there?

I'm looking for the Course family - what should be the easiest ones are William Course, died March1860 in Hitchin and Henry course, died 1875 in hitchin. I know that the Back Street chapel was their place of worship and have identified  marriage and baptisms, but nos sign of burials, then I found the story about the burial ground......

Thank you - Yes, that looked promising, but they suggested deceased online (no answers there)

This shows the Congregational Chapel on Queen Street - churchyard disused. There was a Methodict Chapel on Brand Street which was close to Back Street (originally linked High Street and Bancroft).

Is it the Queen St chapel records you are after?

On an 1897 map, the burial ground is marked as disused.

Perhaps burials had already ceased by the time the people you are looking for passed away. but the  chapel still remained open for worship.
