Elizabeth Ellis death in or after 1841 Rotherhithe/Deptford area
« on: Thursday 08 May 25 11:21 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find the death of an ancestral aunt in or after 1841, presumably in the Rotherhithe or Deptford area of Surrey (now London).

Elizabeth Lepine was baptised in 1787 at Christ Church Spitalfields, Middlesex.

She was the daughter of Isaac Lepine (1750-1828) and Elizabeth Palmer|Lepine (c1751/2-1830) and was of Huguenot descent.

Elizabeth Lepine married Abraham Ellis in 1814 at St Leonard, Shoreditch, Middlesex.

They had children and later her husband became an inmate of Greenwich Hospital as he had been in the navy.

In 1840 she had a settlement examination in Bethnal Green:

In 1841 she was living with her daughter and common law son-in-law Elizabeth and William Bentley and their children at Upper Neptune Street, Rotherhithe, Surrey:

I wonder if they moved to be nearer to Abraham Ellis in Greenwich Hospital.

William Bentley and Elizabeth Ellis junior formally married in 1845 in Rotherhithe and her father was a witness.

In the 1851 census Elizabeth Lepine|Ellis is not with the Bentley family in Deptford:

I assume she had died by then, however I cannot find her death between 1841 and 1851 in the area of an Elizabeth Ellis born around 1787.

I can't find her in the 1851 census elsewhere either.

Can anyone please help me find out when she died please?

Thank you,
Jon

You can buy the death certificate for £3 online via the GRO website and download it once paying, to see if it is her. Hopefully it will name her husband.

DEATHS: Ellis, Elizabeth, aged 60, Whitechapel Union, March quarter 1843. Volume 02 Page 446.

Thanks all.

I have bought the certificate and it shows the following:

Elizabeth Ellis died 18th March 1843 at Whitechapel Workhouse aged 60 a pauper of fever.

The death was registered by the Master of Whitechapel Workhouse.

So sadly nothing can tie her in for sure.

I have tread that Whitechapel Workhouse was also for Spitalfields.

However if the 1840 settlement examination for her was for Bethnal Green, if she was removed from Rotherhithe, I would expect to find her returned to Bethnal Green.

I need to see if another Elizabeth Ellis is in Whitechapel Workhouse in the 1841 census.

Thanks again.
