Hi all. I'm new at this and most grateful for any insight you can offer. Ancestry.com has led me to this couple in my family tree and I'd love to know who their parents were and anything else I can find out about them.

Charles Finch: I'm not sure when or where he was born. It appears he died in Newbury in 1837.

Sarah Matilda Tuckwell: Born somewhere in Oxfordshire, 1776. Married Charles in Newbury 06 July 1806. Died at the home of her daugther and son-in-law in Great Eversden, Cambridgeshire, 1 Sep 1858.

There was a Charles Finch who apprenticed as a cabinet maker in Aston Tirrold starting in 1793. I found that on TheGenealogist site. Possibly the same Finch? One of the couple's sons, Robert T. Finch, was also a cabinet maker in New York for what that's worth.

I know from a helpful new friend from the community forums at Berkshire Family History Society that there was a John and Martha Finch in Aston Tirrold around this time. I suppose they might have been Charles' parents -- but I haven't seen any record of a son with that name.

I also learned Charles Finch left a will, so I have requested more info about that from the Royal Berkshire Archives.

So that's where I am. Any suggestions very welcome!

Hi HowardBeale,

Welcome to Rootschat - I'm sure you will find help from members here.

According to the marriage recorded on the Berks FHS CD, Charles Finch is stated to be a "widower" but unfortunately no further info is provided.

In the Berks FHS baptisms CD, I have found a Sarah Matilda Tuckwell baptised 12-2-1775 in Wallingford St.Peter (d/o Joseph & Sarah both from Wallingford). This could be the wife of Charles Finch.

If this is the correct Sarah,  then there are a few other baptisms for children of Sarah & Joseph in Wallingford.

Welcome from me too.

A couple (at least) of cabinet makers in Newbury named FINCH. There is a George FINCH, cabinet maker of Newbury who was bankrupt in 1840. And also a John FINCH, cabinet maker of Newbury married Elizabeth HOLDWAY of Bishopstone in Feb 1841.

There is a death notice for "Mrs Finch, wife of Mr C Finch, cabinet maker, Newbury" died on 24 June 1833.
Friday,  June 29, 1833
Publication: Berkshire Chronicle

The only mention I can see of a "Charles FINCH" is in 1834 when John HAZELL of  Crookham was convicted of stealing apples from the garden of Charles FINCH.

You possibly already have Sarah's death notice:
Saturday,  Sept. 4, 1858
Publication: Reading Mercury
Saturday,  Sept. 27, 1834
Publication: Berkshire Chronicle

Unfortunately the death of Charles FINCH is not on the GRO index though it does appear on FreeBMD (Newbury Dec qtr 6/138). A shame, because it would give you the age at death. I have reported it to the GRO, though it usually takes some time to repsond.

In addition to the will of Charles Finch, cabinet maker, in 1840, there's also a will of Gray FINCH, of Newbury, Cabinet Maker, in 1793.

It is there, but mistranscribed. Aged 59.
