That is why I was careful to say it is a transcript of a BT - two steps from the original.  You can see one instance of "Treeton, West Riding" has been mistranscribed. Needs further checking.
I have found Notts FHS helpful in rechecking a query.  They sent me a copy of an original marriage.

The year in the licence volume is 1777.  See the previous image.

All I can see on the page before is 1778 (no. 1256) and then the lists of marriages start that has Joseph Mercer on the next page.

This is confusing.

I can't find anything about Elizabeth Oslow. As far as I can tell there isn't even an Oslow family in Nottingham.

Edit: If it helps, Joseph's wife Elizabeth was buried in 1805 at age 50.

Willsy - you're correct, but yesterday the link took me to image 1248, not 1257.  Just checked my browsing history - strange!  Sorry for the confusion.

I suspect Oslow is a mistranscription of Horsely / Horsley / 'Orsley. This document is just a transcribed index and we don't know how many generations away from the original records it is.

If I am suspicious about a spelling of a surname, I check how many of tha spelling appear on free BMD. Precisely one Oslow (marriage in 1943) and if that one was pursued, I suspect it would be a mis-transcription.
Reminds me of several years ago, when I attended a U3A family history group. One of the members spent 4 months looking for an ancestor with an unpronounceable surname (not enough vowels). She had got this from a transcription on Ancestry, she continued this fruitless search even after I found the actual image of the register on FindMyPast, where it was clear it was a bad transcription of the marriage record and her ancestor's baptism could be found in a few minutes with the correct spelling.

Then that's a relief! I just wonder how someone could mistake Horsley for Oslow.
