And for what it's worth, some city directories. I started at 1878 trying to match the 42 Cherry St address you say they were at on the 1880 census, but didn't find it. Also from 1892 and worked backward, but didn't quite meet in the middle. I didn't do whatever is available from 1884 to 1888.

Assuming that is him at 18 Beach in 1892, then that eliminates 2 of the 3 addresses in 1891, because those men are still at the same addresses, leaving 115 Washington Place as the only possible address for your William in 1891. - assuming he was listed in the first place.

Best bets are the later ones at 18 Varick and 115 Washington Place.  And the 18 Beach Street address is where the child Elizabeth Sullivan was born in 1891, daughter of Wm Sullivan and Catherine O'Shea.

I have my doubts about the earlier addresses, but included them anyway.

When you search for that certificate number on the NYC Vital Records site, it is really Charles Summers and Christianna Riley, but their certificate says they married 1 September 1881. And they are also indexed with certificate number 2368.

searching italiangen.org in the brides' index for #2368 in Kings Co in 1881 does not find anything.
searching ancestry.com for the exact date in exactly the Bronx does not find anything that would match.


and this is  not them. it also was indexed under William only.

I haven't figured out if you can browse the certificates at the NYC Vital Records site or not.

I think the letter S with the certificate means special, which I think is for marriages where the certificates were created months to years after the date of marriage.  I am not positive, but I think they are not available anywhere online.

I think S-415 is the Soundex code for Sullivan. the Italian Genealogy site includes them.

I don't have the 1880 Census for William St. - wish I did! It might unlock William's parents and address in Manhattan. OR show his marriage to Catherine.  1890 would be great also.

Here is the NY State index I found for Catherine Sullivan. But I agree with your logic this is probably not our Kathleen - esp since you found her marriage record with the name "Kathleen".  This puts Kathleen's birth back in question.  Could she have been Anna Kathleen and went by Kathleen?

I followed your links to Jeremiah & Sarah's wedding and then to Maria's marriage. I tried to search Ancestry/Family Search for US or NY Census showing Jeremiah & Sarah. I couldn't find one. The only records I have found for anyone named Sullivan married to a Sarah Simpson are the civil records in Ireland and Maria Sullivan's marriage to Robert Roundtree in NYC in 1881.

To make a positive connection to the couple who married in Cork City in 1851, you/we need to find a connection in the US between Maria and William - like a common address, or find the family with all children arriving together, or a baptism record for William S in Cork son of that couple.

Oh! Apologies. I was just starting to compare the Directory findings to the map I created. I now see the reference to the 1880 census. Let me dig back into where I got that address.

Reviewed my sources for William and trying to figure out why I thought I'd found an 1880 census reference (I still haven't work it out.)

I found this Ancestry hint I'd "ignored" for William Jrs WW1 Draft registration. What stopped me from accepting was the middle name listed "Jeremiah" rather than "John" as reported on William John Jr's Birth Cert. The address matches and is the same reported by his brother Ed.

I know William Jr is buried in Somerset Hills Memorial Cemetery in Somerset NJ. Unfortunately, he doesn't seem to have a listing in Find A Grave. My parents do...

I took at shot at searching Family Search NYC passenger lists: looking for Jeremiah (var spellings) Sullivan 1840-1905 and then reviewed any record from the late 1860s through mid-1870s. While I  found several age-appropriate Jeremiahs (around 40) all traveled alone.  No luck connecting Jeremiah to William Sr this way.

I've learned so much from both of you and taken lots of notes.  I keep re-reading our chat thread and discovering new ideas you've shared. I literally cant' keep up with you both. <3

You can find an ED on the census if you know the address, at https://stevemorse.org/census/unified.html. First pick the year at the top of the page.

In 1900:

And I looked for anyone named Sullivan arriving in NYC in July 1873 and did not find them. I wonder if they are on the manifest with only their initials?
