Word went around calling for volunteers, to rescue the injured, recover the dead to London Road Cemetery and assist the Fire Brigade, Ambulance and Services.
My late Great Aunt had heard bomber aircraft in the dark, saw the orange red sky 9 miles away and when Tom didn't come home for breakfast told me she was worried sick and even more so when the Police Motorcycle stopped at the gate, Mrs S, your husband .... has asked me to send you a message, he has volunteered to help and will be late home, I have got to go, Goodbye.
