Puzzling marriage register entry
« on: Sunday 04 May 25 20:49 BST (UK) »
I came across this marriage entry for the West Felton parish in Shropshire:

Quote
No 27
Mr Thomas Harleston of [the] parish of Whilechurch sing man
Mrs Hannah
and Mrs Hannah Bill of [this] parish sing woman
were married in this church by [ ] licence [ ] this thirteenth
Day of July in the Year of our Lord One thousand seven
hundred and fifty sixty By me Tho Alcherley min...
This marriage was solemnized between us Thos Harleston [  ] in the
presence of John Bill ?? Bill ?? Bill

I can't quite make out the first names of two of the witnesses, but most confusingly, why the Mr and Mrs prefixes, especially if Hannah Bill is a single woman? The vicar's surname is a bit difficult too, and Thomas' parish is actually Whitchurch, I think.

I believe “Mrs” for a single woman was used as a sign of respect. So either in a higher position in society, or perhaps not quite as high, but older in years.   I would be inclined to err on her being older.

My attempt at the witnesses. Prepared to be shouted down.  :)
Witness under John might be “Wm”

Looking at other entries, I think the vicar is Atcherley

Amended this because I misread Hannah (Hana)‘S signature as a witness.  Idiot!

Wow. Thank you. I will clearly need to take time to follow this up when I've finished the FindMyPast marriages and burials for the Bill surname.
