Dear Maddys52,
This is fantastic – thank you VERY much!
Would a couple of other details be possible?
Firstly, I wonder if we could get an accurate date of Alice’s birth?
I assume she went into service 1900 – 1902. When did Benjamin ILLINGWORTH lose his wife?
In the 1911 census, were all of the family members still there, or had Herbet, or Elsie Margarite left and possibly married? What of Annie Bottomley, his cousin?
Alice never married. Would I be right to assume that on the death of Benjamin ILLINGWORTH, her time in service ended?
It would be nice to know if Benjamin left the paintings to her in his will (hence my curiosity about family composition), or whether Herbet, for example had given them to her after his father’s death.
Thank you again.
…. out of interest, the two paintings are versions of ‘Hush’ and ‘Hushed’ by Frank Holl, which are in the Tate Gallery. I don’t yet know if my two paintings are also by Holl, but this information certainly gives some provenance.
