Edward McWiggan, Wiggan, Hibbert 1878- 1942
« on: Tuesday 29 April 25 01:33 BST (UK) »
Hi,
I have hit a brick wall and need advice or suggestions, please. Been searching for years but still stuck and thought to give this a go. (Sorry if i have written too much, just want to give everything i have, not sure if i have posted in the right section).

My Ancestor Edward McWiggan 1878-1942- can't find any birth records or 1881 England Census on him.
1891 England Census- Has an Edward McWiggan age 14, birthplace Bollington, Cheshire, England. He was an inmate at a Certified Industrial School at Macclesfield, Cheshire, England.

He then married Sarah Ann Tatton- 9/5/1899, in Glasgow.
The marriage certificate states that Edwards' parents were James Edward McWiggan, Architect (Deceased) and Margaret McWiggan, M.S. Hibbert (Deceased).

They had 5 Kids: Edward (1899), Amy (1901), Margaret (1905), William (1905), and Charles(1912), all with the middle name Hibbert and were born in Glasgow.
The whole family migrated to Victoria, Australia in 1926 and some of them changed their last name to Hibbert.

I keep seeing a James Edward Wiggan (Born:1832 (census), Died:1888 (death index)), 2nd marriage was to Margaret Nightgale (born: 1834(census) died: 1887, Lancashire (death index)).
Could this be the parents i am looking for? Could they have put Edward in the Certified Industrial School at Macclesfield when they had him? Because in the 1881 Census, there isn't an Edward Wiggan in the household.

Could the last name have been written down wrong, or are there any other alternative spellings that i should try instead?

Thank you so much for reading! I really appreciate your time!

Welcome to Rootschat.
What about this one. Freebmd.
Births Sep 1876   McQuigan Edward  Macclesfield 8a119
The Macclesfield district includes Bollington.
The entry on GRO  Index has no mothers maiden name so probably illegitimate.
You can download the entry for £3.

In 1881 there is a McWigan family living on Church Street Bollington.  Head of household is Margaret age 42 unmarried and there is a son Edward although aged 9 which is a bit out.

I wonder if the names/ages of Edward and John have been confused as there is a son John on census aged 4 but I can only find a record for John born 1871 who could be aged about 9 and Edward would be nearer 4.

This 1881 census has Margaret as unmarried,  she is a charwoman has 4 children.

What about Sarah Ann Tatton. What information is there about her parents, she is also born England,  if we can locate her before the marriage it might help.
Edwards surname is a tricky one.
