Second name
« on: Sunday 27 April 25 15:36 BST (UK) »
Hello

Today I came across this record of baptism and I am struggling to understand the second name of the boy.

His name is Dennis but the second name could be Shirgen, Stirges, Shorges? It seems he had no father because his mother's name only appears (illegitimate perhaps?) I was wondering if the mother put as second name the possible name of the father, after all it was not uncommon to put other people's surname as second name, right?

Also, after his second name the inscription "bareborn" reads? What would that imply?

Thanks in advance

Second forename could be Sturgen and the other word is baseborn which means he was illegitimate

I think it's Sturges, and as you say, a surname used as a middle name often 'points the finger' at the father.

Thanks!

Mary Humby was born in 1774 and her son Dennis Sturges Jr was born in 1801 in Dinton Wiltshire so Dennis Sturges Sr might have been the person you're referring to, Trish

By the way, I found out yesterday that Mary had two other illegitimate sons: Henry (1808) and William (1822).

Today I made some additional research on Mary Humby.

It seems she was written down on her own baptism record by her mother only: Elizabeth (no father registered it seems). This was around 1774.

Curiously Elizabeth was also registered with her mother's name as well. On her baptism record from 1741 it reads "Elizabeth the (Spur:)"???

From what I have found out there were three generations of single mothers from the same family on the same town: Elizabeth Sr, Elizabeth Jr and Mary Humby. :o :o :o :o :o
