AGEF(?) reference in Australia 1940s

Good evening, all.

Wondering if anyone can help me with this please?
This is from a railway worker's record for my great-uncle, Edward Joseph (Aloysius) CHRISTIE.
It appears to be dated 31/3/1917 with the reference 'granted leave to serve with the AGEF'.

Google searching and Trove searching with this term haven't helped much; I believe that it is likely to be a WW1 military expeditionary force but I'm unclear as to what this is or means.

I have attached a copy of the document; my apologies if this has been added incorrectly.

I suspect it is an I not a G.

Australian imperial Expeditionary Force

Added.. I cannot see a war record for him at NAA

I am puzzled too re the NAA records. His mother made a reference to RAN service in his obituary, but I can't find anything to support this, which seems so very odd.
Is anyone aware of anywhere else that might hold records of this organisation?

This man, Jack CHRISTIE, would seem to be a brother, and served in the Navy, and I am not seeing a NAA record for him either.


Did this family use another name?

Thank you all.

Yes, the article attached by wivenhoe is about John Frederick Christie (abt 1898 - 1974), Edward Joseph's brother.

The lack of records is very confusing.

Also apologies for not recognising that AIEF is AIF ...  ::)

As far as I am aware, they did not use another family name.

Edward Aloysius CHRISTIE was RANR = Royal Australian Naval Reserve.
