UK : 11th Hussars
« on: Sunday 27 April 25 10:56 BST (UK) »
Enquiry / Assistance sought :

Can anyone advise does a contact and or website exist, that may be able source information about a member of the 11th Hussars, in a period between 1885 through 1899.

My interest is for an individual Jame William HALL, described as Sgt 11th Hussars, when he was buried, in the cemetery attached to the Royal Victoria Hospital, Netley, Southampton, Hants.

I have "lost" a James Edward HALL of Brill, in Buckinghamshire post the 1881 census and recently found this death. He is about the right age at demise, when he passed in October 1898.

Any assistance / direction most greatly received.

Thank you,

Brian E

If James William was buried in the cemetery at Netley Hospital it strongly suggests that he died in the Hospital. If so then he would have still been serving in the Army at the time of his death. This means that his service record will almost certainly have been destroyed shortly after his death as there was no need to retain it, for instance in case of a later claim for a pension due to injury or disability sustained during his service. Army widows, if he had one, weren't routinely awarded a pension at this time. She would have had to rely on her local Poor Law Union for help.

It's hard to say why he might have been at Netley. His Regiment, the 11th Hussars, were serving in India from 1892 to 1899 and so it is possible he was being treated for a tropical disease which he contracted there, although clearly he may have had a completely different medical condition. There were departments at Netley for treating psychiatric cases as well as sexually transmitted diseases such as syphilis.

Have you found James William's death registration and tried obtaining his death certificate? His name doesn't come up in either the standard GRO death registrations or the Armed Forces and Overseas Deaths for Q4 1898. Having his death certificate would tell you the cause of death, and by whom the death was registered, although this is unlikely to be a member of his family. It should also give his approximate date of birth which would help in confirming or eliminating him as the same person as the one you are looking for.

Brian,

Where did you find the information about James William Hall being buried in the Netley cemetery? I can't seem to find it.

I chanced on it, in the Find my past website :
The publication is found as a typical church burial register (in the example I found ) dating from 1864.

Each page header is adapted/endorsed " Burials in the Cemetery of Royal Victoria Hospital, Netley, in the County of Southampton in the year ~~~ "

James Edward HALL is found on page 144 entry 1148 (for 1898 )

Find my past detail document as archive :

Netley, Hampshire   Burials            Army,  Hampshire,   England

ref WO 156 / 118 British Armed Forces and Overseas Deaths and Burials.
------------------------------------

His Death also has a GRO ref : December quarter 1898 South Stoneham 2c 39

OK thanks, I have found it. What threw me off was that you named him James William Hall in the opening posting.

I thought I would update still further I purchased his Death Registration on-line.

Didn't give me anything tangible that he is the James Edward HALL I am seeking :

He suffered / died from a liver abscess, for just over a year.

He had served as a Farrier Sgt in the 11th Hussars of the Punjab, that specific, as recorded.

One strange (to me) part of the record details : Royal Victoria Hospital, Hound, in two places.
Where the date and place of death has Hound RD written.

Do you know if Hound is maybe a district in which the hospital was possibly located ?

------------------------------------

Apologies for misquote of his name in opening post : His father was William and the person I am seeking is a James Edward HALL b 1872
