Edge and Chrome now force all website addresses to start with 'https' , regardless of whether a website address actually starts with that.
EDGE
1. Type in our full Web address from scratch using 'http' and press 'enter' (
http://www.sheffieldindexers.com)
Double check the address and you'll find Edge has forced the address to start 'https'.
2. When the address comes up as 'https' it will have a warning triangle (or other symbol) to the left of the web address possibly saying 'not secure'
3. Right click the triangle (or other symbol) and you'll get a pop up. Select 'permissions for this site'
4. This will open another 'settings' tab. Scroll down the list to 'insecure content' . The drop down box to the right should say Block (default)
5. Use the drop down arrow to change this to 'allow'
6. Close the settings tab and this will return you to our web page .
7. A message at the top will tell you to 'refresh' the page.
8. Select 'refresh' and the page will now load and the site should work as normal - it may still say 'not secure' to the left of the address but the search pages should now work
9. Bookmark the page.
Chrome
1. Type in our Web address at the top of the screen from scratch using 'http' -
http://www.sheffieldindexers.com and press 'enter' . You'll see that Chrome has loaded the site with the web address starting as 'https' and you'll see to the left of the web address there will be a Padlock (or other symbol) and you may see the words 'Not secure'
2. Right click on the padlock (or other symbol) and it will open a pop up box - select 'site settings' at the bottom of the pop up.
3. That will open up a new tab with a long list of setting options. You'll need to scroll down the list until you come to one called 'insecure content'
4. At the right of the 'insecure content' there should be a drop down box set to 'Block (default)' . Use the down arrow to change the option to 'allow'
5. You'll then need to go back up to the top of the screen and close that settings tab. This will take you back to our website. You'll see a message near the top of the screen telling you to 'Reload'
6. Click on the 'reload' button and our webpage will refresh. You should then be able to search and use the site as normal although it may say 'not secure' to the left of the web address and possibly now show a warning triangle.
7. Bookmark that page and you should be okay from now.
On Firefox I have to google whatever record set I need (eg marriages, burials or whatever), and go from there as the homepage buttons no longer seem to function
