Where id Elizabeth's father live?
« on: Saturday 19 April 25 19:46 BST (UK) »
I can't quite make out the place where Elizabeth's father lived, but it seems he was not a parishioner? The entry is for Oldbury in Shropshire.  https://search.findmypast.co.uk/record?id=GBPRS%2FSHROP%2FP212-A-1-1%2F116217&parentid=GBPRS%2FSHROP%2FBAP%2F510404

That's what I thought it said, but what does it mean?

:P Hazard a guess that it may have been a pub/hotel or as the combined facility was known back in those days...an Inn.  ie: The Fiddle ... Thus they may have been travelling, from elsewhere, and she happened to give birth on the trip...
Or, because he "lived" there, was very well off and could afford a lengthy stay? But then would he not have been "of the parish"?

adding: Looking further into the couple from that baptism  Feb. 16. 1717  Oldbury Shropshire
Dau. of John Bill & his wife...The man lived at ye Fidle...But was no Parishioner.
Might this have been a secret birth, if it was this couple?

Hi, I noticed that there is a place called Rhos Fiddle in Shropshire, is it possible that it is a descriptive name?
Rhos Fiddle seems to be heathland?

Good thought...My thought, though, was that the Ye (the) made it sound more like a local "place within a place"... for example "the cottages", "the Moors" or "the Warren"...
There weren't all that many John Bill in Shropshire. A very successful leather-worker/saddler from Drayton d.1720 who may have been related.

John Bill  England, Staffordshire, Church Records
Marriage License  1710 Baschurch, Shropshire, England
Marriage  14 February 1710  Spouses Sarah Hutton

I have, I think, traced part of my wife's Bill/Bills family back to the parish of Willey. To take a broader look at the Bill/Bills family, I am currently going through all the Baptisms, Marriages and Burials for the family in Shropshire. FindMyPast has returned 426 baptisms and I am up to the Elizabeths in transcribing them fully and checking the images, so quite a way still to go.

My thoughts on the baptism in question were that Fiddler may be a location in Oldbury parish, and that the baptism was for a family not normally resident. However, the wording I am used to actually states that the father "was of the parish of ...", which makes me think he is possibly some form of intinerant. NLS have old maps of Oldbury, but only as far back as the 1880s, so tring to find  somewhere called "Fiddler" may be tricky, unless older maps can be found online. I will check with the Shropshire FHS to see if anyone can help. The parish is adjacent to Bridgnorth, so a clandestine baptism may still be a possibilty, but I have never come across clandestine baptisms before, only marriages. I will look at this further.

David Nicoll has a reply above, naming a place. Don't see any population there, though...and a long way to go to give birth, as I noted above,  in Ye FFidle...(The Fiddle.) There were very few BMD entries in Oldbury in any given year ( few as one seldom more than ten) as the population was tiny & small even now.  Maybe check the 2 marriages to see if they gave a location for the men.
Seems the Drayton Will might need a read through as well.
