Missing 'Media Gibbs' after 1901 census.
« on: Wednesday 16 April 25 13:34 BST (UK) »
Hi, I've been stuck on this name for a few months now. Media Gibbs. She appears to go missing in records after the 1901 census. This is all the information I have below

her father was my 3X Great Granduncle George Essex Gibbs and he was born in 1838, Blandford, Dorset, England. He married Mary Jane Kiddle in 1860 Weymouth, Dorset, England.

They had 3 children I've included info on all three they do appear with each other in some of the census.
1. George Shadrack Gibbs aka Shadrack George Kibble Gibbs (name varies) b.1863, Blandford, Dorset, England. d.1935, Southampton, Hampshire. Money was left to daughters below in probate/will

Married Clara Jane Bascombe in 1893, Branksome, Dorset.
         1. Constance Media Gibbs b.1894
         2. Clara Adelaine Gibbs b.1895, no mother maiden name given on register, but in 1901 census.

George appears in the following census.
1871. Cannot locate
1881. In Fontmell Magna, Crown Inn Turnpike, as a boots inn servant.
1891. Possibly living with brother in Parkstone.
1901. In South Stoneham/Southampton with wife and two children.
1911. Cannot find George Shadrack here but his wife is living with their daughter Clara and George's mother 'Mary Jane Gibbs nee kibble' in Shirley, Southampton.
1921. Bricklayer living with wife and others in Southampton

2. William Essex Gibbs b.1866, Blandford, Dorset, England, d.1950 Poole, Dorset.
Married Mary Elizabeth Condland in 1884, Surrey
        1. William George Gibbs b.1884, Chertsey, Surrey
        2. Florence Beatrice Gibbs b.1887, Poole
        3. Clara Minnie Gibbs b.1892, Poole
        4. Vera Louise E Gibbs b.1895 d.1896, Poole
        5. Rose Ellen Gibbs b.1897, Poole,
        6. Lilian Louisa M Gibbs b.1900, Poole
        7. Gladys Daisy Gibbs b.1901 Poole, Dorset
        8. Charles William Gibbs
There may be more siblings but not too concerned about this at the moment.

Media's brother appears in the following census.
1871
1881
1891
1901 in Branksome with family
1911 Branksome cottages, Poole, Bricklayer
1921, Essex Cottage Poole, Builder Foreman
1939 Essex, Cottage in Poole, retired Bricklayer

3. Media Gibbs b.1875, Broadway, Dorset, England. She was baptised in 20 Nov 1881, Branksome, Dorset with her parents listed. The general register index has her listed as Meda Gibbs instead of Media in 1875, Weymouth. Her mother's maiden name is also misspelt as Keddle not Kiddle. I do not believe Media married, though won't rule this out as a reason I cannot locate her after the 1901 census.
1881- Living with her parents. I've just noted there is another sister Constance (note Constance Media Gibbs as a reoccurring name after this).
1891 - Living with mother and father in North Stoneham
1901 - Living with mother only in South Stoneham

4. Constance Gibbs b.1870, st Helena Jersey, Channel Islands first time I've seen her (see above)
Baptised in Blandford Forum, 1871. married James Glass in 1890 South Stoneham.

I've had a look at any migration records that may have show she moved abroad. The family was also known to go and live in Wales. I cannot find any marriage records or death records which would indicate a change in name or that she had passed. Any information on Media Gibbs or suggestions on why I am a dead would be great. Thanks in advance

What about the niece living with her in 1901 - can you trace her in 1911 in case they were together?

Have you ruled out the Minnie Gibbs who married S Stoneham Dec 1904?

Media is pretty unusual and could easily have turned into something else.

Grooms were either Edwin Bollom or Edwin George King

Other bride Agnes Mary F McMahon

Edwin Bollom possibly marries again in 1913 as a widower so if we can find him in 1911 to see what wife he had

Oh thanks for that one I'll check it out. Stoneham seems to be the area they settled in so hopefully that is the one!

Oh no, I'm sure that's not the only one. I'll have a look and see what I can find for a Beatrice too. The Vacher name does seem memorable too perhaps they were distant relatives.

Re the Vacher family in 1861 he was Joseph not John.

Probable marriage in 1850 to Jenny Kiddle who was a widow maiden name Jacob.

The daughter Rachel Vacher born 1851 has mothers name Jacob

So Kiddle seems to be the link there
