Thanks for the further info amondg, unfortunately I don’t have the marriage cert of Alfred & Jane Smith, I know that Jane was born in Battersea, but not pinned her down yet. Interesting about Rose’s death in Houghton Regis, thats next to Toddington and the age is correct.
Thanks

Jane Smith is a very common name and her age varies  1861-1868, without her fathers name and possibly witness names--  they are often relatives, you may never know.

Do you know what happened to Alfred causing them to go to the workhouse in Ampthill?

Beds Advertiser and Luton Times 28 October 1910
Houghton Regis Parents Censured
A Sad Tale of Poverty and Incapacity.

It is a very long article and deals with the Inquest for Rose Buckingham.
Father Alfred was out of work and the family lived a 5/- per week earned by one of the boys.
The child only weighed 9lbs and it mentions the mother is Jane.

Leighton Buzzard and Observer and Linslade gazette  13 June 1916
Paraphrasing
Jane Buckingham fined because children Edward and Maud not attending school.
She is described as a married woman so Alfred must still be with them1916.
----------------------------

Leighton Buzzard Observer Tuesday May 15, 1917
Paraphrasing
Inquest into the death of Edward Buckingham (registered as Joseph Edward 1903)
He apparently died of Lock Jaw after cutting his hand on the cogs of a Chafing Machine.
Mother Jane Buckingham identified the body.

Thanks again amondg, very interesting newspaper articles and they all fit in with the time scale, poor Rose looks like she was only 1 when she died. I am unable to find any trace of Alfred George Buckingham, maybe he just left the family to look after themselves, certainly it was a hard life for this family at that time, I’m still digging around, any more info I gather I will post
Thanks
