Have a fun-filled and joyous Easter Sunday & Monday. I still always find Good Friday so depressing...

It used to be that shops closed at three O’clock for at least an hour on Good Friday, everyone had fish for lunch and Easter eggs were not eaten until Easter Sunday —- how things change.

An overcast and chilly morning here.
Eldest son may come to see if I need anything ,pretty well stocked up though but no idea when second son is back ,I hope he does not travel on Monday!

Well no news really ,hope you all have a pleasant weekend and for those unwell at least a comfortable one .
Cheerio.  Viktoria.

When I was young my mother would shop for fish and hot Cross buns on Good Friday,  now it seems a free for all, not checked  who is open, I shan't be shopping  today.

Not so many years ago I helped to give out hot cross buns locally, Covid put a stop to that, was quite good fun as it happened,  then church later

Yes TFY, Good Friday I find depressing , specially when " the passion" is read.

Good Friday Walk of Witness from Radstock up to Westfield. Should have been an open air service but the weather prevented that. Nevertheless a full congregation ,about 60 folk, in the Methodist Church at Westfield and the Radstock Silver Band providing the music. Refreshments after in the church hall.  Organised by Churches Together in Westfield and Radstock. A good morning out.

There's nothing wrong with being mediocre...as long as you're good at it!

What on earth is all this variety of Hot Cross Buns about?  The silliest I have seen must be the Dippy Egg ones -a chocolate bun with a "creme egg" type filling!   Then there's the cheese ones and all kinds of different flavours.  Give me a nice spiced fruity bun with lots of butter, sometimes split and toasted.  Mmmm!

Always split and toasted, otherwise they're not HOT cross buns?! ;D

This the earliest newspaper reference that I found to "hot cross buns" at BNA.

Porcupine, 15th June 1801
(Part of a long diatribe against current trends in the observance of Easter (not actually referred to by that name in the article))

Quote
Our own way of observing (or keeping) Good Friday falls far short, in my humble opinion, of that religious appearance with which it ought to be kept. The allowing hot-cross buns to be cried in our streets from day-break, is not only a relic of Popery, which I am surprised has not long since been abolished; but the noise and confusion which it occasions, together with the thoughtless and profane joy with which they are purchased, not only by the lower class, but introduced in higher life, as a treat, tends greatly to do away the solemnity of the day...

The Saxons, we are told, ate buns marked with crosses in honour of Eostre, goddess of spring or light, who gave her name to Easter. Antiquarians cite similar practices among the Druids, Phoenicians, Greeks and Romans in honour of Diana, goddess of the hunt and the moon.

I completely agree, apart from the requirement to toast them, I find them tasty enough just as they are. In fact so much that I buy them all year round.  :)

I don't think the 'hot' element refers to the toasting, I'm guessing that it was originally that they were sold straight from the oven. Either that or a reference to the spices.

Yesterday was warm enough here to sit in the garden, today it's grey and positively chilly. Oh well, we've had some lovely days so I suppose I should just be grateful.
