There are several posts on rootschat about errors on the 1911 children born / died etc, I was trying to help out on one last week.   :)

I also have an example in my tree where the number of children noted is less than those actually born to the couple, they appear to have just counted those still living at home.

Exactly as they were supposed to do. Anyone living at that address on the particular night that the census was taken, not anyone usually living in the house but absent on that night.

The question in 1911 about numbers of children is not about the number of people staying there on that night, it says -
Children born alive to present marriage and is divided into 3 columns - Total children born alive - Children still living - Children who have died

Quite likely  people either didn't read it properly  or couldn't read at all,  they did their best.
