I am searching for a John McNaught born in Galloway in 1740 I would like to find his marriage and if he went to Donegal Ireland.  I believe the name changed to McNutt in Ireland.  Any help would be appreciated thank you

What is the connection to Dumfries as you have posted on that board.

What document gives his birthplace as Galloway & his birthyear 1740

Entry is on SP & also these births/baptisms.  All Penninghame & father is Duncan McNaught.  No marriage for Duncan

25.10.1749 - Margaret - mother is Mary Maxwell - not Janet

4.4.1763 - Martha - mother is Janet Maxwell

14.4.1775 - Elizabeth mother is Mary Maxwell

Check SP for a marriage for John www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

If all those births are the same couple, it constrains Miss Maxwell's date of birth.

She could not have got married until she was at least 12, so she could not have been born later than 1729.

And her youngest child was born in 1775 so she cannot have been born before 1725.

A marriage at 12, although legal, was very rare, and births to mothers over 45 were also very unusual. So I think these have to be at least two different couples.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Thank you very much Colin I do appreciate this.  I hadn’t found a marriage in Ancestry.  I have been
searching this morning on Scotlands people, no luck with Baptism or Marriage.  At so point son John b 1740 finished up in Donegal Ireland  ..at least that is what I suspect.

I wonder if Mary and Janet Maxwell are the same person, certainly the surname is the same…. Just thinking out aloud!
