Thank you everyone, especially joger, for all your research whilst I've been asleep over here on the other side of the world!

I've since found this which states Rene was indeed the son of Gilles, (I think!)  ;)

Yes ,that's what I found " fils et héritier par bénéfice d'inventaire" ( which means that he did not have to pay all the debts of his father).
