Thank you once again. I've searched again but can't find him on the 1939 Register so maybe he'd joined up already. We know he was one of the lucky ones who came back from Dunkirk.

Thanks for this advice, Chris Doran.  As you suspected, I had been going via the Start Free Trial route, but can now see how to use the free offer and have found the information I was searching for.
